Slmen – Style Guide for Men in a Metaverse

BareRose was a real revelation for me the first time I visited it. I still remember that heady sense of sheer visual intoxication - all those endless columns and rows of neo-Gothic Japanese couture. It made my head reel - you want to take in all at once, but of course it’s just impossible. I was 5 and in the giant toy store of my dreams all over again.

I re-experienced that same giddy joy last night when I popped by Discord Nightmare City. The parallels with BareRose are unmistakeable - wall upon wall of lace-and-latex-and-leather-confections, creative energy coursing up and down the panels like so much electricity. But Discord seems to have taken the narrative process one step further, weaving a story of futuristic fin-de-siecle into the collection of spaces (what they’ve called ’streets’) that together make up Nightmare city - searchlights ply the different floors in search of fugitives, and occasionally, the unwary shopper is momentarily trapped in a crosswire cage.

I’ve elected to showcase the one Discord outfit that seems to me to best exemplify its creativity, in this case, a reimagining of the neo-Gothic staple of the Victorian men’s suit. The Discord iconoclasts have dipped the usual black suit in an psychedelic pink dye and I find the end result most enchanting. Speaking of magic users, I owe a debt of inspiration to the SL artist Arahan Claveau and his trademark madcap spellcaster ensemble (Hello Kitty knickers and magic staff, in particular!). The Discord outfit is a little less culturally knowing, but I doubt I’d have dared to have donned something quite so pink if he hadn’t shown me just how much fun off-red magi have. The outfit comes with the belt depicted here, gloves, as well as glove strap attachments.

The other accessories on this outfit are the excellent Shearwater glasses from Serious Giggle, which comes with menu-driven controls for lens colour, transparency and lens gradation; there’s Mhaijik Guilaume’s new Kavi Poet Ring, whose gemstone’s kalediscopic colours swirl ever-so-gently around; as well as Striker Albatros’ delightful little magic bottle earring, from his ‘Maho-Do’ (Japanese for ‘Magic Emporium’) shop. Striker also stocks some great magic staves, which he’ll customise to a colour of your choice for a nominal fee. No prizes for guessing which colour I had my staff changed to.

I continue to be impressed by Simone Stern’s amazingly low-priced collection at Style Starts Here. I frequently turn to something from SSH when I can’t think of what to wear. I know that the styles will mesh, and that the quality will be consistently good. This black pin-stripe shirt is nicely done, with clear textures and well-matched seams — not easy to do with stripes, believe me.

I wanted a contrasting color for my pants, so I chose the white jeans from Indigo, another color of the multi-pack of jeans that I showed recently in black. Not sure what color belt I’m wearing as it’s under the shirt.

Have I told you before this hair is available from Boon…FOR FREE? If I haven’t, I’m telling you now, and if I have, it bears repeating! Jeans by Indigo.

I’ve known Adam Soler from Lookr since his very beginning. He is now an established designer, with a lot of stuff covering various needs. I’m showing today his new FORM suit. It comes in three colors (400 Lindens each), each color pack can be completed with a complement pack, one offering 5 alternative cuffs and the different cufflinks for 50 Lindens, one offering an alternative open shirt for 90 Lindens. In a color pack, you will find a jacket, a closed collar shirt without tie, another one with a tie, all of them on all layers available (shirt, jacket, undershirt plus complement on the underpants layer), a pair of pants on both the pants and underpants layers, three versions of sculpty prim collar: a simple one, one including a tie knot (to wear with the shirt with tie and closed jacket, for example), and one including a full prim tie (to wear with the shirt without tie, worn without jacket, for example). You will also get a pair of sculpty cuff attachments. Everything is totally moddable and copy no transfer.

FORM shows a very neat handdrawn texture with cool details. It has a strong personality without being show-off. A must have for elegant male avatars!

Lookr will open a new big store on a new sim on May 14th. You will find the press release after the cut! There is a modeling contest with nice prizes!

Hoods are comforting, I think. There’s something very reassuring about pulling up a cowl or some fabric around your ears and over your head. Some years back, I came across a design book which featured what clothing might look like in the near future, say 10 or 20 years down the line. Quite a number of the designs had hoods in them, in one form or another. It’s not hard to see why - we live, after all, in an age of increased uncertainty - whether it’s about the world’s weather or water levels or air safety. And, of course, there was *that* white hood, in the music video of Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Outta My Head’.

With this outfit, I’ve tried to do some sartorial crystal ball-gazing of my own. The hoodie’s from Defectiva, a shop by Disembodied Hand that stocks his t-shirts and skins. It’s a well-shaded hoodie with a nod to Star Wars (the emblem on the front is the insignia of the Empire, and there’s a stormtrooper-and-crossbones on the back). What makes it stand out from most, however, is Disembodied’s thoughtful inclusion of follicles - if only more designers would include hair options with their hats and caps! The pack includes a hood with hair, as well as hood and hair as separate pieces, which maximises its customizability.

I’ve accessoried with various items from 3 cyberpunk stores - the watch and eyes are from Juliet Ceres’ Bitter Thorns; the boots (’GongFo MoonBoots’ - how can you not love a name like that?), utility leg strap and lip piercing are from Mantis Oh’s Hybrid Productions, and the belt is from Neaky Larsson’s Paradox line. All 3 designers produce excellent work - Juliet’s Cybereyes, the items from Hybrid Productions and Neaky’s belt all come with animated textures - the MoonBoots, for instance, have a very subtle energy band effect under the top cuff. Mantis Oh’s mainstore is quite a visual treat in itself, too!

Speaking of visual treats, the outfit was shot against the backdrop of Nebulosus Severine’s ‘Null’ artwork, over at Arthole (a collaborative exhibition space shared by Nebulosus and Arahan Claveau.) Brilliant, thought-provoking art to be found there.

Hello peeps!

I haven’t been online as much lately, and I’d like to apologize to slmen.com’s faithful readers who are used to daily posts, for the slower routine the past two months. If I had more time to spend in Second Life, I would have shown the work of Mirai Jun, the designer behind CE Cubic Effect, much sooner! Mirai isn’t just another photosource designer; he is more than that. With a few talented others, he has introduced prim clothing for men. Each item comes with many attachments that take realism to the next level.

Sure, I would always prefer graphic designers talented enough to hand draw clothing, with the genius to transform 2D textures into the illusion of volume. They would always be my favorites. But it would be unfair to reject what customers like sometimes: hyper-realistic items. Mirai works with sculpty prims, obviously, and those who know the work needed to properly apply textures to sculpties (photosourced here) can’t do anything but applaud the result.

I chose this short leather jacket in red; you can have it in many other colors. Attachments are moddable, and yes, it’s a bit tricky to adjust, but the time spent is worth it. 380 lindens per color.

Also showing for the first time on slmen, a hairstyle by Kavar Cleanslate for Exile. I should have shown his work earlier, too, but patience has been rewarded: Kavar just released new textures, and they are just perfect. You will discover “Alex” in my favorite colors below. My very favorite is this rich deep brunette named “Mink.” I simply love it! You can have a set of 6 colors for 250 lindens (Browns, blonds, reds, wild card, blacks, or a special selection named “Kavar’s favs”) and an everything pack for 1000 lindens (30 colors.)

It comes over us every now and then, that urge which a wise woman by the name of Rihanna described as the instinct to “get my body moving / Shake the stress away”. And, of course, look good into the bargain. Today’s outfit was put together with those twin urges in mind - a little number that seeks to transcend the stiffness of a formal suit as well as the over-casualness of a tight tank top + jeans combo.

The shirt’s from an Italian clothier, Genius Target, and is apparently inspired by a real life Dior piece. It features a field of white stars against a backdrop of gray - very beautiful from a distance, and when you’re fluidly grooving away in a club, it positively shimmers.

Perry featured the Black/Steel Shanghai shoes from JCS a while back. What you see here is that pair’s Gray/Silver cousin. This version has a Chinese coin motif on the front of the shoes, very delicate stitchwork, and a lightly burnished leather texture which somehow manages to look like leather and metal at one and the same time.

Helping to anchor the ensemble is the very bold, masculine Nightstalker watch, with its black titanium casing embedded in a wide, sturdy black double-latched leatherband. It comes as a fully working watch in its own right, with several choices of backlights, but the watch’s very thoughtful designer, Aveline Stein, has also thrown in a HUD version that attaches to the SL client screen.

Spiking things up a bit are Insurrection Piercing Set from Primitive Design, a black headscarf (complete with flung back, gravity-defying platinum locks) and a silver bracelet, both from booN, as well as an intriguing unisex necklace from Satryra Singh’s MadeForYou, made up of alternate braids of leather and what looks like…nylon cord!

Emma Gilmour, under the name “Hudsen Armidi,” has recently designed these very well done moto jackets. They come in a wide range of colors. In each color pack, you will find a jacket layer, and, in two pre-sized but moddable versions (one for men, one for women or small avatars), cuffs, collar and a bottom piece in sculpty prims. As you might notice on the following pictures, the texturing of the prim attachment is totally great. You can often find unmatching textures between clothing layers and prim attachments, but these ones are melting almost perfectly, with a level of quality I never knew ’til now. Everything is, obviously, moddable and copy-no transfer. Choose your favorite colors for 475 Lindens each! Besides the classic ones, try on the bright ones, like the luminous green I’m showing in the main composite!

Maybe it’s because I come from an island country that’s completely surrounded by water, where the sea’s never more than a half hour drive away. Or perhaps it was the updated Village People sensibility about the outfit. Either way, the moment I laid eyes on it, I was seduced by CheerNo Destiny’s ‘Sexy Sailor’ set, part of A.C. Store’s just-released line of menswear for spring.

CheerNo’s new line is steeped in Christian iconography. The belts in his different sets have enamel buckles with pictures of Jesus, Mary and the saints. There’s a sweet wittiness at play in the clothes - the Sao Sebastiao set comes with a shirt with black X-es over arrow puncture marks, as well as a pack bag (not unlike a golfer’s bag) but here filled with arrows where you would expect golf clubs (Saint Sebastian, a Christian martyr from the 3rd century, is traditionally depicted as tied to a post and pierced with arrows). The ‘Like A Prayer’ set has a gorgeous black lace jacket, a rosary-like necklace, and - check this out - a matching black lace veil (at once a comment on blind faith as well as an ironic inversion of gender roles)!

But back to sexy sailors. This particular set comes with a blue-and-white striped tank top, a pair of jeans with one leg rolled up, the image of the Sacred Heart emblazoned on it, and what is quite possibly the nicest sailor’s cap I’ve seen in Second Life. All of the new menswear sets at A.C. Store additionally come with a pair of angel’s wings and a splendid 18-point halo.

I was happy to learn of these new cowboy boots at hoorenbeek because I’ve always been fond of the Keith hair/hat combo from Moderno and never had boots that went with it. And these boots are great….the top matches the bottom nearly flawlessly. The pattern in the leather is beautiful, the texture of the leather realistic and soft. The black are my favorite (go figure), but all colors are cool.

Muism’s black tank worked well under this sadly no longer available jacket from Desert Moon (sorry, folks…). (There is a very similar one available called Rampage, though.)

Also worn: the Ratri Night Dark Ring, one of my favorite recent pieces by Mhaijik Guillaume, and the snakebite necklace from Zona Cero.

Namida Akami, the designer behind the MUWU brand, has designed stuff for girls for a little while, and started men’s fashions a few weeks ago. This “English boy” jacket, sweater and shirt combo is one of the very first items she created, and it’s a complete success! Textures are nicely done, and you can really feel the different fabrics: soft wool, rougher fabric for the jacket, perfectly ironed shirt. For 90 Lindens, you will get a combo. I like having separates to mix and match things, but I have to admit combo clothing is maybe easier for men in a rush! Three layers are provided — jacket, underpants and jacket layer. You can use the shirt layer under the jacket layer and set the sleeve looseness to a higher level to give the jacket a more natural look, as this looseness is not adjustable on the jacket layer. English boy is now available in red, green, black and blue as well. Im sure you will soon see more MUWU stuff on slmen

There are days when life just seems to have blown a great big hole through you. Moments when you feel like you’ve been punched repeatedly in the gut and you can barely breathe. But there’s also that sense that you’re not going down without a struggle. That if you have to bow out, it’s going to be in a blaze of glory.

This is an outfit for just such a day. I’ve been wanting to feature CheerNo Destiny’s A.C. Store range for some time now; CheerNo’s Sport Red Male set is one of his signature pieces and it’s easy to see why - the sight of it ups your adrenaline and drive by a few degrees. The set includes a well-shaded red vest with a white and red bar pattern running down the front, a prim hoodie, 2 wrist wraparounds in white, and a pair of jeans (not depicted). A.C. Store’s menswear line for spring is due to be released today or tomorrow has just been released, and I think that’s definitely worth looking out for.

I’m also wearing the pair of Legendary Indigo jeans from Ocean Lane’s Chase store. These come in 2 pairs, one belted and the other sans belt. The package also contains two prim back pocket attachments (with a wallet sticking out of the right back pocket), and a prim buckle and belt.

Completing the outfit are Makaio Stygian’s sassy Rock City Knuckle Busters - these have letter-plates which you can customize with up to 4 characters/alphabets on both the left and right knuckle busters; the set also comes with a ‘Represent’ gesture (depicted below) which literally allows you to shove your attitude in your friend’s (or foe’s) face.

The phone rang. It was my boss and he wanted this article as soon as possible on his desk… Suddenly after hanging up the phone my clumsy hand spilled the coffee on my new suit!! It was the suit I was about to write about in the article, a complete outfit in the same pack, for a mere 350L$. We have several layers that allow us to have different looks with the same suit. The pack bring 2 pairs of pants (with and without belt), 2 jackets (open and closed) and 2 different shirts (open, closed with tie, and closed without tie). It also includes 2 prim ties which we can use with both or open shirt. Hoorenbeek’s special edition All Stars are so fun…I don’t think I’ve worn any other shoes for weeks. My favorites are the red tartan, followed closely by the brown tartan. The black with white logo, and the all black versions are cool…the red, I find the red of the laces just a touch too bright to feel real, but I’m not complaining! I love the All Star line of converse-like shoes.

The Muism tank is hot, and makes my av look more muscled than he really is, which is okay, because it cuts down a bit on the ridicule. I squeezed my unrealistically straight-line tiny-assed avatar into a cool pair of red-belted jeans from Indigo. These jeans are an amazing value at a mere 100L for 9 belt options (red shown). They come in a bunch of colors, with midnight pictured here.

What else…oh! Gritty Kitty still has this really nicely done beaded bracelet in four different color themes. I chose the earth toned Mud Belly version. Nicely textured beads…one of my favorite bracelets in my inventory.

Many of the clothes at Valiant live up to their name - military blazers, racing jackets, you get the idea. Wavie Haller’s Emo Checker Vneck shirt, however, is less concerned with firing guns or getting one’s jaw broken, and more concerned with an ol’fashioned love. It’s there in the oh-so-retro checkered pattern that harks back to a simpler time, and there, too, in the tender buttons in different colours that run down the front of the shirt like little M&M chocolates.

The shirt seemed to go well with Kai Rau’s roomy white capris - included are 2 lateral pockets and a back pocket, but what I really like about the KR capris are the little drawstrings on the cuff attachments.

I’ve also donned Gospel Voom’s grungy Gos Windrider Damaged watch - all distressed metal on the outside, but whose tough little heart is still faithfully telling the minutes and the hours. It’s a fully functioning watch which sets itself to SL time when rezzed, but can also be adjusted to any timezone. Gospel Voom’s included some animations and gestures that go specifically with this watch, including one which has you tapping the watch in apparent frustration. The laughs from those alone are worth the price of the watch!

‘Tis the season for things to positively bloom! New menswear shops. New menswear lines. And now, it’s my great pleasure to introduce to you Shiki, a Japanese menswear line that celebrates the season with a riot of colours alltoo rarely seen in SL men’s fashion circles.

Shiki (Japanese for ‘Four Seasons’) quietly blossomed in a Japanese sim about a fortnight back, the joint brainchild of Shinichi Mathy and his friend, Jeckie Hax. Shinichi’s fertile mind has hatched a whole range of various menswear items all thematically linked by a floral motif.

The designer’s playful sensibility shines through in every pixellated thread of his clothes - for example, his staid ‘Stratos’ suit, a sombre grey jacket with matching pants, has a cheeky floral pattern on the jacket’s lapels. Also noteworthy are the 3 pairs of handpainted pants with colours that literally pop out at you, off the screen.

My favourite piece from Shiki’s first season, however, is the ‘Bouquet Long-Sleeve Shirt’ (shown here with the sleeves slightly rolled up). To me it encapsulates all the boldness and vitality and joie de vivre of Spring. Shinichi’s hard work on the pieces may not be immediately obvious - the more discerning among us will, however, appreciate the good job he’s done to ensure minimal ‘creasing’ in the shirt centre. Also especially praiseworthy is the thoughtfulness with which Shinichi has packaged the shirt - you get 2 jacket layers (1 buttoned all the way up, the other allowing you to show a bit of chest), 2 shirt layers (ditto the jacket layers), and 1 underwear layer (absolutely crucial!).  

Here, I’ve paired his Bouquet shirt with a pair of dark blue denim jeans, also from Shiki. Again, lovely details on this one - Shinichi’s woven a highly distinctive floral pattern into the front pockets and back pocket flap. Shiki’s clothes are moddable, copiable, and no transfer.

Truly, it’s time to let a hundred - no, a thousand flowers bloom!
