Nouveau chez Casa del Shai / New release at Casa del Shai: The Barong Tagalog

A few words from Shai, found on her blog:
“Centuries of Spanish colonial period refined the distinct artistry of the Barong Tagalog, the Philippine National Costume for men. When the Spanish ruling dictated a demarcation against the lowly Indio, Filipinos were made to wear their shirts not tucked under the waistbands.

To add to that, Barongs were fashioned out of sheer fabric and with no pockets, appeasing the Spaniards’ fear that Filipinos are not out to attack them with hidden bolos and other weapons. As a result, the people focused their skills into defining their clothing as a symbol of resistance. Each shirt is handcrafted and embroidered with the distinctive piña cloth (fiber from pineapple leaves) or Jusi fabric made from abaca or banana silk. Despite its seeming flimsiness, the Barong Tagalog stood proudly against a revolutionary canvas of freedom uproars and rebellion.”

• What I like: A tribute to diversity and multiculturalism; As always, the style, so unique ; Many ways of wearing each color pack, and so many outfit combinations: sheer shirt alone (as shown on themain photo-composite), sheer shirt on undershirt (as shown on the second photo-composite), undershirt only, which is a cool henley. The black dress pants which come with each color pack are also totally versatile and could get along with many outfits.
• What i dislike: the “no-modify” top pieces, and especially those on the shirt layer, which avoid to fight the “tight-sleeves-syndrome” on jackets. Yes, I’m perfectly aware it’s my obsession of the moment :-)
• Each color set is offered for 500 Lindens.

  1. Ben, I’m so glad you’ve covered these absolutely wonderful and elegant pieces from Shai which lauds her cultural heritage as well as the diversity in the global community of Second Life. They are very beautifully made and you look great in them.

Let’s see if we can convince Miss Delacroix to adjust the modifiability of those shirts.

  2. [...] Madame Delacroix spoils us these days! After the exceptional “Barong Tagalog”, these are the derivatives. Today, I chose to show you the Amorsolo suit. It comes with 2 ties and a Barong shirt, under an embroidered grey jacket with a flexi tail attachment. A matching pair of pants comes to finish the outfit. “Amorsolo” is sold for 650 Lindens. [...]
