Truc du jour / Tip of the day: Avoiding the jagged pants’ bottom bug!

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

•••July 3rd 2008 update••• Some paranoid “designers” thought it was stolen textures I used for explanation purpose on this post, and asked me in the most snotty and patronizing manner to take the picture of their texture down from the website, the server and any of my personal computers, before I had a chance to explain I simply used low res screenshots taken from appearance mode window. When they knew this was how I got it, they were ok with the picture staying, with their logo on it. I changed it though, and I swear I won’t show in any way any texture of these persons anymore, even worn on avatars :)

There is a bug in sl that annoys me like hell since my rezday: the jagged edge pants bug. It’s most frustrating, when you just bought a new pair of pants, to see it looking so bad because of yet another sl glitch…

Ugly pants’ bottom due to an SL bug… :-(

I know many designers provide cuff attachments for a better finish, but I’m not totally happy with them, as their texture rarely matches the pants layer’s texture, and the fix is so simple there is no reason not to offer one more possibility of wearing pants, a prim sparing way ;-)

This bug can easily be prevented. When working with the pants template, don’t put the alpha right next to the boundary on the template. By painting your texture over the edges of the template, you can avoid this most annoying glitch! See the examples of bugged textures and ones that avoid the bug.

Coupe de cheveux très courte pour hommes! Very short hair for men!

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I’ve been searching for very short prim men’s hair for a long long time. I knew it could be more than tricky to build, especially the nape of the neck.

I discovered these ones recently in “Little Heaven,” the shop of Falastear Aeon, a Japanese designer, and picked them up immediately.

They come in 8 colors, in each color pack you will get 3 presized versions for men, and 3 for women.
After a bit of adjustment (cuz short hair has to fit your head shape more closely than longer ones), I was pretty happy with it!

This very short haircut has a very trendy flair, with hair swept to the front. The work with alpha texture is very nice and the 3D effect is very good on such short hair. Front and sides are totally great. The nape of the neck is less convincing, but, as I told you, this is the most difficult part on short hair, plus it has to adjust on many head shapes.

Its building is very original, compared to the way hair is usually done. It means a lot of work, as usual textures for hair can’t really be applied on these prims.

Now i just wish many hairmakers will follow Falastear Aeon and offer us more nicely done short hair!

New shopping sim “Style Starts Here” by Simone Stern: affordable quality casual clothing.

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Style Starts Here” is the new concept store created by Simone Stern, well known owner and designer behind “Simone! Design.” The idea is to offer affordable quality fashion, to provide multi layered items, and to offer casual but elegant clothing.

Style Starts Here, by Simone Stern, @ Style Starts Here (120, 131, 29)

Practically, that means that you can find there shirts, sweaters and jackets for 50 Lindens (some exceptions go for up to 125 Lindens), pants for 100 Lindens (some exceptions go up to 125 Lindens). Simone Stern is smart enough to know that selling 1,000 items at 100 lindens is better than selling 100 at 300 Lindens. I’m personally pretty fond of win-win deals like this! It’s such a relief to see a well established designer like Simone Stern, providing clothing and accessories to the community for 3 years, offering good stuff at fair prices. Cool stuff without many prim attachments, but with good seams (don’t laugh, it’s not so often), with lower pants which don’t look jagged (yes, there are ways to avoid that, now the trend is to put a quickly done sculpty cuff to hide the bug). After seeing so many poorly done items on the market at delusional prices lately (I’m not talking about high range and high quality expensive items with an exclusive flair you can see often on slmen :-) ), it’s so cool to find a place like this. (Guys, I will tell you a secret: you don’t look good and classy with overpriced poorly done items on your back. You just look ridiculous and stupidly show-off).

Every item comes in every layer possible. This is the best way to perfectly mix and match many outfits, and at slmen we are neverending advocates of multi-layer items. So you get shirt, undershirt, jacket and complement on the underpants layers (those which allow you to wear a shirt or undershirt layer with low waist pants without showing your belly) for the tops, and pants and underpants layers for the pants, the underpants layer being a great alternative when you want to wear your pants tucked in boots without messing with the sliders in appearance mode, and back to normal when you want to wear them untucked.

A few samples of what SSH offers for men:
[Click on the picture to enlarge]

Top Down: some separates shirts and sweaters, some separates pants, some complete outfits, some leather items.

Everything is obviously moddable, another point we are extremely sensitive about at slmen. That should really be the rule, and I’m glad more and more fair and customer conscious designers allow their customers to have clothes that actually fit well, whatever kind of shoes they wear, for example, but also to avoid the ugliest thing in sl men’s clothing (in my humble opinion): jackets with tight sleeves. This is so simple: the volume of the sleeves is given by the shirt layer, “sleeve looseness” in appearance mode. You just have to give a dozen or a bit more points to that slider, adjust a bit the sleeve length of the shirt and of the jacket layer to have a perfect realistic look. Too many “designers” are forgetting this, and preventing their customers from looking good.

Finally, the range of classy casual that “Style Starts Here” offers is a great addition on the market. You can choose in sl between hundreds of jeans, from clean to the dirtiest you could ever dream, brand new or torn to death, in all washes you can imagine. But when it comes to wearing a cool pair of chinos, the selection is terribly narrow. Some people complain that SL offers too many sleek and classy items and not enough alternative items. Well, we must not connect to the same grid :-) On the other hand, you can get plenty of good suits and tuxedos, official and formal wear. To summmarize, lets say that Style Starts Here is the perfect outlet for casual friday wear, and a bit of a weekend wear, when you want to be cool and comfy without looking like you are about to wash, or just finished washing, your car!

Left to Right and Top Down:
The new Style Starts Here Shop. Coffee corner with the reward system. One phone booth, housing the super gift system

What else? This! Simone Stern offers in “Style Starts Here” the most flexible gift system. No store card with imposed amount. Here you can reach one of the phone booths in the sim which houses the system, make a deposit on your account, and then give the exact amount of money you want to whomever you want in the grid. It’s simple and secure. The person you are offering such a gift could even, if you want it, receive an IM telling her about your gift. The mad coder behind this is Stephen Psaltery, and he is damm good! I was told that, maybe, this system will be for sale on the grid soon. I can’t wait! Another way to give gifts or to shop soon will be to browse “Onrez.com.” The items will be available there in a little while.

But wait, there’s more! Simone Stern wanted to reward her customers, hanging out on the sim, helping each other. So she offers a cool coffee corner with free coffee, tea and cookies. You want more? You’ll have more! Members of the group will soon be able to benefit from the reward system. When you come here and chat with your friends, helping the newcomers, you will be rewarded with 4 lindens every 5 minutes. The amount you gain will allow you to buy SSH stuff. This is not camping, as the system pops the people off the chairs in the coffee area every 30 minutes. Another smart way of being good with her customers in a win-win deal!

Note: I often get criticized in IM when I show Simone Stern’s items. Not because they have flaws and that I push readers to buy bad products, not because they are ugly, which could after all be possible, as a matter of taste! No, just because I’m showing Simone Stern’s items.

So this is the occasion to make some things clear: Simone Stern lets her customers know about what she does and doesn’t do in her customer service. Yes, she doesn’t pretend to be your friend to sell you more stuff, like many others do. You know what? It suits me well. And I intend to promote her stuff, as often as she will offer good and reasonably priced items.

More. Simone Stern doesn’t pay me. Simone Stern is not my friend, she is on my list for easier contact, period. We don’t hang out together, gossiping on every other designers, she has no time for this, and neither do I. Yes, I respect a lot Simone Stern’s business as I consider her a fair seller and content creator. Yes I’m thankful because she helped me a lot when I started slmen and I was totally unknown. She provided me stuff without even thinking of any reward, as slmen could stop without taking off. This is not a reason why I would show stuff from her that I don’t like. As a conclusion, I won’t tell you that I’m paying everything to run this blog, and therefore I do what I want, it could sound rude…

Slmen is one year old! YAY!

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Saturday, January 5th, 2008

For the year following its start in january 4th 2007, Slmen has been 320 posts, 541,800 visitors, 993,300 viewed pages (see stats below).

It has been hard work, but a labor of love, with a simple goal: promote quality content creation in the virtual fashion scene and propose, and not impose, looks to men, with minimal comments, like a RL fashion magazine would do.

When slmen began, it was all about “where to find things for men.” This year, it will become “what to choose” as the men’s fashion landscape has dramatically improved during this past year, in quantity and quality. I hope humbly slmen had a little part in that expansion.

Thank you to the content creators who make our second life so enjoyable!

Thank you to Perry Proudhon, Harper Beresford, Dominic Palisades who worked for slmen in 2007 and allow me to have some rest sometimes! Peeps, you have to endure my demands and my terrible attention to detail, thank you to have held tight though!

We will together work to make slmen better this new year, with maybe a little less posts, but more selective ones.

Thanks to you, faithful readers. Without you, slmen would not have lasted more than a few weeks :-)

I wish you all an awesome new year with Slmen!

8 things

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

I was tagged by Zoe Pinkdot.

Here are the rules:

1/ Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
2/ People who are tagged need to write a post on their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.
3/ At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
4/ Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

8 things about Ben Vanguard:

1/ My first pleasure of the day: to stop by a café along Boulevard Raspail before going to my office, sip a double coffee with cold milk and watch the people walking on the street. Each time I wonder whether or not I will have a croissant, but most of the time I don’t.

2/ I wouldn’t cheat on my companion in rl, but I did fall in love in SL. It ended badly.

3/ Each time I came back home in the evening, I was surprised to not see my cat jumping on my shoulder, although she died a few years ago. That was in our former apartment. Since we moved to a new condo, it’s over. I miss her so.

4/ I had cyber in SL and I loved it.

5/ I cook almost every day and it’s like doing yoga or so; it calms me down, incredibly.

6/ I wish we could have children. In the “country of the Human Rights”, it’s a shame that gay people aren’t allowed to adopt.

7/ I consider laughing my ass off as the best abs training ever. My coach, Ildiko (Miss Do-It-One-More-Time), disagrees. Isn’t she a bitch?

8/ I so love cows that I never ate any. And never will.

And now, Solange Cerveau, Grazia Horwitz, Perry Proudhon, Eponymous Trenchmouth, Mhaijik Guillaume, Lillie Guildenstern, Aemilia Case, Swaffette Firefly:
you are SO tagged! :-D

102,000 visitors on slmen for November 2007!

Ben Vanguard | - Non classé | Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

It’s happened! The threshold of 100,000 visitors per month has been reached in November 2007 (and more than 420,000 since the beginning of slmen.com). 292 posts (including 10 guest ones) were published in 11 months. More than 2000 pictures were used to do the composites.

Slmen has become my Second Life. All my SL time is dedicated to do it. My goal has never changed: just make the items showing on Slmen look as good as possible, and avoid meaningless comments. It takes me between 3 to 5 hours for each post, more for some posts about skins.

I want to express my gratitude to the designers who have supported me when I began, providing me stuff although there was no interest for them to do it: Mhaijik Guilaume, Shai Delacroix and Simone Stern. Thank you to the designers who now support slmen.com (see their brands on the welcome page, side bar). Without them, Slmen coudn’t exist. Also a huge thanks to Tao Takashi, who provides his feeds to the community, and especially the fashion planet feed. I’ve been on it since August, and my audience increased a lot since then. Thanks to Ryan Darragh who was the first to link slmen on another website, the great Men’s Second Style (not to mention he did 2 posts for slmen!). Thank you to the content creators in sl, who make from our sl experience an amazing journey. Most of all, thanks to my dear friends who have supported me, accepting that my passion for sl fashion content becomes my main (to not say exclusive) activity in SL, avoiding me to hang out and chat with them as much as I would like to! And finally thanks to you for reading it :-)
