Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: “Rfyre,” “Gutterblood,” “Ottico” and a Few Words about Sezmra Svarog

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Costume, Night, Special Event | Sunday, September 14th, 2008

When I first thought about shooting “Dysis” from Rfyre, I sampled various hairstyles trying to find something that suited the mysterious feel of this ensemble. I think the obvious choice would have been some untamed tresses, lending a romantic air. But as I experimented with different skins, I suddenly saw Dysis as less of an elegant gothic outfit and more dark, almost post-apocalyptic.

Raven Pennyfeather’s costumes are always inspired and nicely textured, this time in tactile embossed leather, bright metallic tones, soft blood-red velvet. The “jacket” is actually a floor-length leather cloak with collar, accessorized with upper and lower sleeves, extended on the glove layer. A mesh shirt on the undershirt layer is topped with leather lace-up shirt on the jacket layer. The leather pants include sculpty prim cuffs (not shown). Finishing off Dysis is a shimmering silver belt double wrapped around the waist.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 4/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price:3/5 - Value for money: 4/5

To complete this outfit, I chose Gutterblood Spoonhammer’s stompy and distressed futureterror boots, still specially priced at 100L. Left boot features an outside buckle and right boot a small outside pocket.

The special anniversary glasses from Ottico fit perfectly, I think, with transparency anti-intuitively set to 100%, giving the glasses a mirror lens.

And underneath it all, the wonderful Black Demonic Skin Claw by Sezmra Svarog, from Nora BodySkins, unfortunately not available anymore. Sezmra is a talented long-time skin designer who recently closed up her shop for good, giving up doing business for money in Second Life for her new endeavor, giving away not only her last women’s skins but the Photoshop files themselves so anyone can customize the skins to their liking. This creative spirit, not the sadly more common desire to get rich, quickly or otherwise, in SL, is pretty inspiring. Hearkens back to the original purpose of SL before it became a land of ad parks and overpriced duplicates of real life fashion. Thank you, Sezmra, for your part in renewing that spark of what used to make us happy to log in here.

edited to add: I’ve received a few IMs in world addressing the comments I made about Sezmra. I have no problem with people who make their living on SL by putting their creative energy into creating…the problem I have is with people who only put their creative energy into marketing, while creating duplicates of real life clothing. Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my text.

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the day: “Fleur”, “JCS”, “Sf Design”…

While trying to think of what to say about Swaffette Firefly’s new outfit for SF Design, I seized the opportunity to bone up on my art history. My first idea was that the outfit put me in the mind of Claude Monet, one of the founders of French impressionism, and I re-experienced the watery beauty of that amazing artist.

I went on to do a quick search of some other Impressionists, only to find Mary Cassatt. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844–1926), an American painter and printmaker, lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists. Her paintings “The Boating Party” and “Summertime” resonated most strongly, reminding me of the overall feel of Swaffette’s most recent release.

Then I thought, wait a minute, you high-minded freak, this is a blog of virtual fashion, not a crash course in art appreciation!

So here I am to tell you that Swaffette Firefly’s outfit is, as always, beautifully hand drawn and shaded, with an excellent eye for texture and color. The SF Design Henly, at 400L, is an amazing bargain for a feast of options on multiple layers — slacks, shirt, vest, jacket…

And Swaffette has done something I’ve been waiting for for quite a while…an ingenious prim attachment to the back of the jacket that eliminates that annoying hyper-fitting appearance (you all know what I mean, I’ve never had a jacket stick quite THAT tightly to my backside irl!). It comes in two different sizes and is easy to attach and barely needs adjustment, and naturally covers the back of the jacket, making it look even more realistic.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 4.5/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price:4/5 - Value for money: 5/5

I thought the Fleur Vivant men’s skin in bronze was a good choice to complement Swaffette’s artistic flair. This is a unique, soft skin, not known (and worn) enough, pleasant to wear, very reasonably priced…one that I frequently forget I have buried deep in my inventory! I need to wear it more often, I think.

Eponymous Trenchmouth’s Scratch shoes in sand/brown round out the Henly nicely, along with the Nimaj Gold Brick ring from Mhaijik.

Enjoy!

Tenue du jour /Outfit of the Day: “A.C. Store” & “GutterBlood Spoonhammer”

This “Taxi Addicted boy” from CheerNo Destiny for A.C. Store is quite original. This complete outfit (including socks, short pants on the pants layer, shirt on the jacket layer, belt, hat and prim collar) won’t please everyone, and that’s what’s good about it!

I like it because it excites my imagination. I feel like it’s a futuristic taxi driver outfit, or maybe some cyber-punk private investigator outfit (because of the hat!)? Also, for some reason it makes me think of the movie “Clockwork Orange.” Anyway, it’s cool to have something different to show!

The whole outfit is sexy looking, with abs showing under the shirt and strategic highlights on the pants. The items are quite well done, with quality textures. The double belt is especially good, with nice badges on it. Attachments (belt, collar, hat) are resizable by menu, which is really useful, and every other item is copy, modify, no transfer. Note that you will get two pairs of socks in the pack, whites (shown) and yellow ones. You will get the whole pack for 520 Lindens. Many other outfits of this “taxi” series are available in store!

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 4.5/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 3/5 - Price:3.5/5 - Value for money: 4/5

It took me some time to find shoes I could wear with it, avoiding Converse like shoes for once ;-) Know that the racers from FNKY! work well with this outfit, and the Jaywalker from Detour as well.

I went for simple boots from Gutterblood Spoonhammer, Da Chic, that are not too high and let the sock show. I wonder whether GutterBlood will sell his boots for long or not, as there is no mention of them any more on his profile. They are still at Glass Earth, on the roof, at a discounted price: 100 Lindens only, a pure steal for moddable copy no transfer alternative boots. Go there to complete your collection and drag your friends, as I feel (but maybe I’m wrong) that these nice boots won’t be here for long!

[EDIT] Gutterblood has still a shop (direct tp here [Designer & Address]) , with new sculpty boots that are worth it! It’s confirmed, old boots will be taken down soon!

Nouveau chez / new at: “Dahlinks”, “JCS”, & “Sf Designs”

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Costume, Special Event | Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Just after the “Toltek” (shown here), Eponymous Trenchmouth created on the same base “Sebastian,” with a totally different flair, with laces, but still with medium heels. I wondered how the hell I could find something to fit these dress shoes, as, in my humble opinion, they were difficult to match with contemporary stuff. Fortunately, after Rfyre who created an outfit to complete the “Toltek,” Swaffette Firefly (SFDesign) found on her last release an historical costume which fits perfectly the Sebastian in red!

“Sebastian” shoes are offered in many colors (coal, mustard, midnight, chalk, olive and red). In each color pack you will get three versions to match your avatar size. Note that the shoes, as it has become very usual now, are designed to adjust on your feet set to zero. The texturing is as good as usual at JCS, and the quality of the design is totally astonishing. You don’t only wear pixel shoes for your avatar when you wear JCS shoes, but also some of the best built and textured items an SL artist can produce… I just can’t wait for the next release, hoping a style which will better fit usual clothing! ;-)

“Isambard” costume from SF design is offered in a complete pack offering many outfits in one. You will find in the f-pack: a pair of pants, a coat with prim lower part (in three pre-sized versions, moddable), a vest, a shirt, everything on many layers, sculpty cuffs for the shirt, sculpty collar (in two sizes), a prim tie, a prim shirt frill and a combo tie+frill. I’m showing below two of the looks you can get. Everything is copy and modify, so you are sure everything will fit your avatar perfectly.

I’m always happy to discover a new range of jewelry for men. Alexandra Nichols just released some pieces for men a few days ago: a monocle (shown) in a steampunk spirit, a bracelet (you will discover it on slmen very soon, resizable by menu), and three rings with diamonds, maybe a bit show off but (thanks god) without bling script inside. I’m showing today the “Eternity male dress Ring” from Dahlinks in “gold and diamond,” but you might prefer the very masculine “titanium and black diamond” or the “silver and diamond.” Each of them comes in three sizes able to fit any avatar. Note that Alexandra Nichols will be more than happy to modify any Dahlinks items for you if your avatar is especially big or small!

I can’t finish this post without talking to you of the customer service offered by the featured designers: it’s just top notch, period. Now that customer service seems to be becoming an option for some designers, considering the low price in RL money of their stuff - such an argument, frankly! :-( - it’s comforting to do business with such customer conscious sweet people!

Nouveau chez / New at: JCS, Philotic Energy, Rfyre.

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Costume, Night | Saturday, June 14th, 2008

In these times when dramas about content theft are running all over the grid, with “collateral” witch hunts and false accusations, it’s nice and comforting to see how great designers can INSPIRE each other in the best way.
All through history, artists have gathered to share and vivify their creativity. Artists of the same field, of course, but also artists from different fields.

When Raven Pennyfeather (costume designer behind Rfyre) saw Eponymous Trenchmouth (shoe cobbler from JCS), something clicked. Let’s listen to Raven:
“Eponymous made some wonderful shoes for men called Toltec. I have made a suit of clothes to match, which I am calling Casteneda as he studied the Toltec. Aren’t they marvelous?”

So, i’m showing today Raven Pennyfeather’s last creation “Castaneda,” the new creation from Eponymous trenchmouth “Toltec,” and to go along with them, a new hair from another great artist, Aemilia Case from Philotic Energy, “Saxon” that comes in her so good new 96 textures.

I have to say it was a pure pleasure to put together items designed by such master-texturers!

“Toltec” comes in two colors (clay/olive and black/red); in each pack, copy or transfer following your needs, you will get 3 sizes.
Choose the size that looks best with your build. Adjust your foot size to 0 (unless you’re going barefoot). That way, you will have always the best fitting with any shoes (except sandals!). To get the best posssible appearance, it may be necessary to adjust the length and flare of your pants.
As usual, the textures are carefully designed, the building is ultra-precise, with an attention to detail I wish I could find more often in sl.
These Toltec have relatively high heels for men. In my humble opinion, they go better with historical costumes or fantasy outfits than “RL-like” outfits.

Fortunately, Raven Pennyfeather designed her “Castaneda” to perfectly fit the “Toltec.” It comes in two colors, Earth and Noir. Each color pack offers, as usual at Rfyre, many items and attachments, allowing more than one look (a mere 11 items in each pack!). Attachments and pants are modify, jackets and shirts aren’t. If you have issues with the length of the sleeve showing under the sculpty cuff attachment (these are perfectly designed and textured) like i did, Raven will provide you modify versions of them. “Castaneda” offers all the creativity you are used to getting at Rfyre!

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: Midnight Fox

I was asking a Singaporean friend of mine, Junz Darkstone, where he’d gotten that delicate, ethereal skin of his, and promptly received an LM directing me to eXceSs. My curiosity was piqued - I’d not heard of eXceSs before, and teleporting in, found 2 really well-styled guys conversing with each other (Bvrve Cremorne, whom I’d later discover was the powerhouse designer behind Monogrind!, and Johansson Sicling).

There are some styles that I know I can’t do half as well as the people who are really into a particular niche culture - the neko (cat) and kitsune (fox) look chief among these. Johansson, on the other hand, seemed to have gotten the kitsune style down beautifully; his androgyne appearance perfectly complemented the Japanese origins of the neko/kitsune style - and then there was that lovely swishy tail of his! I promptly IM-ed him, found him wonderfully open to being featured on SL Men, and the fruit of that conversation is this post.

To achieve his look, Johansson started with the twitchy fox ears and tail from the Aventity Fox AV, as well as the black sweater and skin from eXceSs. He opted for long hair, reasoning that it would go well with the pale skin and the turtleneck collar, and chose a deep blue so that this would form an interesting contrast with the general gray/black base. The torn and stained Nekogear jeans, belted army boots from ShOOz! and wired legwarmers from Primitive Design helped provide a bit of aggro to balance out an otherwise feminine ensemble.

Also noteworthy is the belt from Monogrind! - there are so many grunge/emo/punk clothing and accessory stores out there, but Bvrve Cremorne still manages to make his items distinctive and special. Definitely worth a visit.

P.S. Johansson DJs at the Body Shop, an *ahem* gentleman’s club, on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 p.m. to 12 midnight, SLT, so go catch him there if you want to see more of his tres chic dress sense in action.

Domch Raymaker | - Tenue/Outfit, Costume, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer, Special Event | Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

BareRose was a real revelation for me the first time I visited it. I still remember that heady sense of sheer visual intoxication - all those endless columns and rows of neo-Gothic Japanese couture. It made my head reel - you want to take in all at once, but of course it’s just impossible. I was 5 and in the giant toy store of my dreams all over again.

I re-experienced that same giddy joy last night when I popped by Discord Nightmare City. The parallels with BareRose are unmistakeable - wall upon wall of lace-and-latex-and-leather-confections, creative energy coursing up and down the panels like so much electricity. But Discord seems to have taken the narrative process one step further, weaving a story of futuristic fin-de-siecle into the collection of spaces (what they’ve called ’streets’) that together make up Nightmare city - searchlights ply the different floors in search of fugitives, and occasionally, the unwary shopper is momentarily trapped in a crosswire cage.

I’ve elected to showcase the one Discord outfit that seems to me to best exemplify its creativity, in this case, a reimagining of the neo-Gothic staple of the Victorian men’s suit. The Discord iconoclasts have dipped the usual black suit in an psychedelic pink dye and I find the end result most enchanting. Speaking of magic users, I owe a debt of inspiration to the SL artist Arahan Claveau and his trademark madcap spellcaster ensemble (Hello Kitty knickers and magic staff, in particular!). The Discord outfit is a little less culturally knowing, but I doubt I’d have dared to have donned something quite so pink if he hadn’t shown me just how much fun off-red magi have. The outfit comes with the belt depicted here, gloves, as well as glove strap attachments.

The other accessories on this outfit are the excellent Shearwater glasses from Serious Giggle, which comes with menu-driven controls for lens colour, transparency and lens gradation; there’s Mhaijik Guilaume’s new Kavi Poet Ring, whose gemstone’s kalediscopic colours swirl ever-so-gently around; as well as Striker Albatros’ delightful little magic bottle earring, from his ‘Maho-Do’ (Japanese for ‘Magic Emporium’) shop. Striker also stocks some great magic staves, which he’ll customise to a colour of your choice for a nominal fee. No prizes for guessing which colour I had my staff changed to.
