Tenue du jour / Outfit of the day: “Aitui”, “Boon”, “Civvies”, “JHZ”, “Style Starts Here”…

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Dressy, Night, Semi-Casual | Friday, October 17th, 2008

Two months ago, I showed you some items of the new “Aitui” collection in a summer outfit, telling you how versatile it is, and especially the “Tokyo Intake” jacket and shirt combo. I’m showing today another look with this jacket, more a fall look this time. I chose “Baggy Jeans” from Civvies to go along with it, and the “Stomper Engineer Boots” from “Style Starts Here.”

Each piece of this outfit shows the same level of quality and attention to detail. Textures are very well done, showing a “realistic” look without being simply “photorealistic” in the most boring way. What I mean is, even though the designers could have simply used photosources, they weren’t satisfied with their work without adding a lot of their own creativity and vision to it. The result is a look that isn’t cartoonish at all, but doesn’t give you the impression you just have RL photographs applied to your avatar. In the end, a very cool look, full of SL spirit, with creativity and craftmanship in every component, thanks to Lissa Maertens, Posy Trudeau and Jesseaitui Petion!

I added nice gloves by Armin Wiefel for “Drawmachine,” with prim attachments for a better look, a modern and casual Watch and Bracelet by HugoZion Kondor for “JHZ,” a very cool haircut by Bo Nakamura for “Boon” and “Neo” by Kaoz Koba for “Damiani,” in tan with beard for today.

Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New At: “Pale Heretic”

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Dressy, Official, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Pale Janus, the designer behind “Pale Heretic,” is a man of many surprises. After having brought the spirit of bespoke in SL with his limited — and quite expensive — suits, he comes back on the scene with a couple of super affordable suits: “Core suit” (sold for 80 Lindens with 5 different shirts), and “Twisted Suit” (sold for 240 Lindens with 3 jacket versions, 3 pants versions, 6 shirts, gloves, 4 tattoos…) soon on slmen. Exclusivity amateurs, don’t worry, Pale will offer you soon new limited series of suits! Limited or unlimited series offer the same level of quality: the best. Just on one hand everyone can have a suit, with a low price and unlimited amount of copies sold, and on the other hand only a few will buy a limited very short series, at high prices, but for a real exclusivity and not, as some do — too many these days it seems — just selling at stratospheric prices items with unlimited amount of copies.

Lets talk about this “Core Suit”: in the pack, you will get a pair of pants on the pants layer, a jacket on the jacket layer, and 5 different shirt and tie combos on the shirt layer. Four shirts are dark grey, one with a nice embroidery on it (it shows only when you wear it without the jacket), with different green ties, one is green with a black tie. Everything is nicely textured, with an attention to details which is Pale Heretic mark of fabric. No prim attachment here, but shadowing and highlighting are so good you really don’t need any. Shirts are preset with some volume to the sleeves, so when you wear the jacket with them, no ugly tight sleeve look. You may want to tweak the setting to suit your taste, which is totally possible as everything is moddable (and copy-no transfer). Useless to tell you to run to take your copy of this very good suit at an incredible price!

Quality: 4.5/5 - Style-Originality: 4.5/5 - Usability (different layers for each item, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price: 5/5 - Value for money: 5/5

Also showing: a nice new hair from Exile, “Avant Garde,” in the beautiful texture “Mink,” a preview of the new skin from Minnu Model Skin “Beijing” in “Sunkissed” tone in a nice chin beard version — Soon an indepth review on slmen —, the always perfect “Dublin” boots from “JCS” in this “Sage” color which matches perfectly the green on the “Core Suit,” and a superb platinum ring from “Guillaume pour homme.” Enjoy!

Tenue de Rentrée / Back to School Outfit: “Artilleri,” “Find Ash,” “Hoorenbeek,” “Philotic Energy”…

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Dressy, Semi-Casual | Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Hoorenbeek” always sells classic casuals and semi-casuals that don’t seem to stand out from the others, but are definitely worth a second look to appreciate their assets. These new “Jacket with hoodie” packs are very generous. Each of them offers on the jacket layer no less than 6 versions of the jacket hoodie combo: two colors of hoodie, brown and grey (shown), for each: with closed hoodie, with open hoodie and integrated undershirt, with open hoodie with alpha, aka showing what you want to wear, even simply your skin, on an underneath layer.

Two shirt layers are provided: a tee-shirt with long sleeves, tintable and pre-set to give volume to the jacket’s sleeves above, and a simple sleeve filler named “broad sleeve,” allowing you to show your skin with the open hoodies without having your sleeves look horribly tight on your arms. (I don’t understand how people can wear jackets with tight sleeves, although they seem very attracted by photorealistic clothing on the other hand - That sort of schizophrenia between the seeking of excessive photorealism opposed to that sort of terribly unrealistic AND ugly tight sleeves makes me cringe, but I will try to survive!) I’m very grateful to hoorenbeek for paying attention to this detail! You will get two sculpty hoods completing the hoodie, plus a pair of white earphones hanging from your pocket as a prim attachment, for a cool discreet finish. You will see after the jump a few ways of wearing the grey hoodie with green velvet jacket. It’s nice when the content creators let the final user express their own creativity (sl is all about creativity, right?) by offering so many customization possibilities in a single pack. I just miss a layer with the jacket alone, and the hoodie alone. But hey, “Hoorenbeek” sells them separately ;-)
Note that you can have the same jackets with shirts or turtlenecks in another series.

“Jacket with hoodie” comes in six color packs (shown below). Each of them is sold for 520 Lindens. The real bargain comes with the fat pack: for less than the price of three colors, you will get all six.

Everything is, obviously, moddable and, to your choice, copy-no transfer or no-copy-transfer. I wish more designers offered this choice!

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 3/5 - Usability (different layers for each item, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price: 3/5 - Value for money: 3.5/5

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the day: “Fleur”, “JCS”, “Sf Design”…

While trying to think of what to say about Swaffette Firefly’s new outfit for SF Design, I seized the opportunity to bone up on my art history. My first idea was that the outfit put me in the mind of Claude Monet, one of the founders of French impressionism, and I re-experienced the watery beauty of that amazing artist.

I went on to do a quick search of some other Impressionists, only to find Mary Cassatt. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (1844–1926), an American painter and printmaker, lived much of her adult life in France, where she first befriended Edgar Degas and later exhibited among the Impressionists. Her paintings “The Boating Party” and “Summertime” resonated most strongly, reminding me of the overall feel of Swaffette’s most recent release.

Then I thought, wait a minute, you high-minded freak, this is a blog of virtual fashion, not a crash course in art appreciation!

So here I am to tell you that Swaffette Firefly’s outfit is, as always, beautifully hand drawn and shaded, with an excellent eye for texture and color. The SF Design Henly, at 400L, is an amazing bargain for a feast of options on multiple layers — slacks, shirt, vest, jacket…

And Swaffette has done something I’ve been waiting for for quite a while…an ingenious prim attachment to the back of the jacket that eliminates that annoying hyper-fitting appearance (you all know what I mean, I’ve never had a jacket stick quite THAT tightly to my backside irl!). It comes in two different sizes and is easy to attach and barely needs adjustment, and naturally covers the back of the jacket, making it look even more realistic.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 4.5/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price:4/5 - Value for money: 5/5

I thought the Fleur Vivant men’s skin in bronze was a good choice to complement Swaffette’s artistic flair. This is a unique, soft skin, not known (and worn) enough, pleasant to wear, very reasonably priced…one that I frequently forget I have buried deep in my inventory! I need to wear it more often, I think.

Eponymous Trenchmouth’s Scratch shoes in sand/brown round out the Henly nicely, along with the Nimaj Gold Brick ring from Mhaijik.

Enjoy!

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the day: “Amodica”, “Philotic Energy”, “Simone!”…

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Dressy, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I’m introducing today the first dress shoes for men created under the brand “Simone!” by Lissa Maertens. For a first try, they are simply great. The textures are nice; the seams between the prims are pretty good. They offer a classic but original style.

They are offered in three colors (brown, black and the “Cordovan” shown below). They are copy no transfer and resizable by menu.

I have to mention their totally more-than-fair price: 200 Lindens per color. Demos are available for one Linden, so they’re worth a try!

You will find them in the main space at “Simone!” — the one where you land, not in the men’s section. (I wish this shop were easier to browse, I swear! It may be me, but it takes me forever each time I try to find something at “Simone!” - Lissa, Simone, do something!)

For my outfit, I used the many times updated “Form” suit series by Adam Soler for “Lookr.”

All the separates offer many options:

Blazers come on every possible layer: jacket, shirt, undershirt, plus complement on the underpants layer. Three colors are available.

Trousers come on pants and underpants layers, plus two pairs of pre-sized and moddable cuffs: standard and flared. Three colors available.

Shirts some in closed version, open versions in three sub-versions: to wear with or without prim collar, plus a rolled sleeve version, each on jacket, shirt, undershirt layer, plus a complement on the underpants layer. You will get in the pack as well a pair of cuffs, and two prim collars, for closed and open shirt version! 4 colors are available.

Everything is moddable and copy-no transfer. Many add-ons are available to complete “Form”: ties and alternative shirts’ cuffs… Probably one of the most versatile outfits available. I like this series a lot, as it’s really different from what you can get everywhere, and it’s a pure creation, without any RL “close inspiration” as we can see too often on the grid now.

Plus a cool hair by Aemilia Case for “Philotic Energy,” the new “Damiani” blonde skin “Angel” you will soon discover in a dedicated post (as soon as possible, I promise!) and not so new but still interesting jewelry with animated textures from “Guillaume pour Homme.”

Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New at: “Styles of edo”

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Dressy | Monday, August 4th, 2008

A trip through edo Tone’s Styles of edo shop can be overwhelming. He has more suits and combinations of jackets, vests, pants, ties, than you could ever wish for.

This new black suit comes with an open shirt and vest (shown); white shirt and tie; white shirt, tie and vest; vest and red scarf (not shown). I really like the detail on this suit, particularly the belt on the pants. edo has a great eye for dressy men’s wear. For those of us who love suits, this is much appreciated!

Truth’s Ersatz in Sable is the hair pictured here. Truth is about to discontinue his stuff, and is having a huge sale, so go check it out. The hair is now 50L per pack of three colors, or 350L for the fatpack. This is a great deal, so get to Truth before it’s not available any more.

The Dublin boots from JCS are always a good choice to round out a suit. Also, Mhaijik Guillaume’s new titanium ring is a nice accessory to wear at any time. The Sofia glasses from Primoptic are also featured.

Lastly, Damiani has come out with version 2 of the Joshua skin, with new tones, Olive being shown here. It’s a great tone, very natural, not too dark, not too pale.

Enjoy!
