Nouveau chez / New at: Akeyo & Brogear

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Casual, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Were you, like me, tired of wearing short pants with your “Akeyo Chucks” scuplty-Converse-like sneakers? Okay, they’re great, but, as high-top shoes, they’re hard to match with long pants without having them show through the pants texture. Artoo Magneto promised a low version of them, and here they are! Same clever script to adjust their size and color (with different colors for each shoe if you want). You will get a pair of laced shoes, and a pair of unlaced ones — your choice to wear them the way you want. If you loved the “Chucks,” a great piece of sculpty work from AKEYO, you definitely need the new low-top version! 600 Lindens. Copy-no transfer.

Look at the latest release at Brogear! You will find cool tee-shirts sold in a pack of three colors for a very friendly price. I’m showing my favorite “Cassette,” but you might prefer “Guitar” or “heart.” 150 Lindens per pack. You will get every possible layer for the tees, copy-modify. This new collection offers short pants, underwear and arm warmers as well. Definitely must see! Oh, you have to know that Broder Kubrick finally uploaded all his stuff on OnRez! Good news for those wanting ordering stuff from the web, without running all over the grid!

Also: cool and more than fairly priced jeans from Duck Nipple, hair from Exile (I just can’t get enough of these), and jewelry from Guilaume pour Homme. Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New at: Gearshift, Ottico & Random.

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Punky | Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Donovan Brennen, the designer behind Gearshift, was on a creative hiatus. I know many people missed him. He came back a few weeks ago on the SL fashion scene with a couple of hoodies and matching tee shirts which are definitely must-have.

“Guile Man” (shown in the main composite) and “Icon Red Male” (look at it on the secondary composite) offer very original textures in cool colors. “Guile” shows a very nice and original pixelated camo pattern in khaki and olive for the jacket, worn over a tee shirt full of bombs! “Icon Red” jacket is softer, with its jacket with subdued red pattern and fur collar worn over a modern-lover themed tee-shirt.

[Click on the picture to enlarge]

Showing [GearShift] GUILE MALE.

In each pack, you will get different layers allowing you to wear the hoodie alone, or with a tee-shirt underneath, or the tee-shirt alone (combinations of shirt and jacket layer); two prim sculpty cuffs to wear with the sleeves rolled up (using the sleeve length slider of the jacket on appearance mode); a hood, worn down, in three sizes; the same hood in a worn up version, in three sizes as well; 2 pre-sized prim lower parts. Note that you can buy for a small price a special hair complement especially designed by the talented Aemilia Case, coming in four colors, to wear with the hood up. This is a really good idea, as most of the time you are forced to go bald under hoodies, due to the hair showing up through them.

I like the amount of options offered. The prim attachments are nicely done and not too tricky to adjust, but I have to say I’m not a fan of the the prim lower part for jackets idea. Donovan’s work is not the problem; I have the same question on each and every piece of clothing on the market with a prim lower jacket. You can adjust them the best you can, and it looks good on a certain pose, with an amazing 3D feeling you can’t get even with the best texture ever; but how can you deal with them when you walk, sit, or let your AO change your poses? You will see that prim attachment passing through your body, again and again… Okay, first, it’s not painful at all; and second, I know many people who really don’t care. But I’m definitely not convinced, although I agree it’s a great enhancement on a purely aesthetic point, on static poses, after proper adjustment . Maybe one day we will have some script making this kind of attachment follow your body movement (like the one for women’s skirts, kinda)? Until then, I consider SL limitations too much of an issue to really allow this kind of enhancement on clothing. That said, I’m very thankful to those at Gearshift, Muism and Cubic Effect, to name a few, for trying to push the limits to the max!

Each of the new hoodie/shirt packs from Gearshift is sold for 400 Lindens. Everything is moddable and copy-no transfer. You can get special hair complements for 75 Lindens each.

Letf to Right and Top Down:
[GearShift] GUILE MALE: Jacket and shirt, Bombs Away shirt alone, [GearShift] iCON Red MALE: jacket and shirt, Geek Heart shirt alone.

Also showing: another great hair from Exile, “Leto,” nice gloves with prim attachments (can we live without them? :-D) from Drawmachine, superb jeans from Random (without prim cuffs! YAY), and the Combat Boots from Hoorenbeek in that new color “old brown.”

I wouldn’t forget the special anniversary googles from Ottico! They come in three versions: on nose, on head (both shown) and hanging around the neck. They are fully scriptable for color changing, moddable and copy-no transfer. I love their buckles and leather texture. Thank you Youki Rau, and keep up the good work!

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: All That Glitters

Domch Raymaker | - Tenue/Outfit, Dressy, Night, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Monday, May 26th, 2008

With the global economy being what it is, the advice from invesment analysts on Wall Street has been to store your value in gold. And strangely enough, the folks on Seventh Avenue seem to be agreeing - metallics, in particular gold, have been making a strong comeback on fashion runways the world over, and in Second Life, is best embodied by this gold jacket and pants from Muism.

It’s hard to go wrong with anything from Muism, really. Icemocolo Voom has an such a keen sense for the uber-cool and, together with Mirai Jun from CE Cubik Effect, has pushed the boundaries for men’s suits and jackets in Second Life through their use of sculpties and prim attachments.

The thing with sculpties, though, is that they’re notoriously difficult to get ‘just right’ and consequently, to wear precisely, such that all the seams are aligned. This gold biker jacket was no exception, but if you’re willing to overlook such matters, then on all other counts it’s certainly going to help you get your shine on.

The Muism pants stand out not just for their colour but the clever gold/brown combination - gold on the front, and brown on the back. The pants come in belt and beltless versions, and Icemocolo has also included a very bold belt buckle with the letters ‘MU’ in gold, for all Muism afficionados to visibly demonstrate their sartorial loyalties.

Completing the outfit are a pair of Muism headphones (DJ-ing animations built in), creme double-strap loafers (beautiful metallic sheen on these!) from Redgrave, and a cuff leather watch from the House of Shaea, which features very fine primwork on the cuff. I particularly like Moon Ling’s use of an serif font on the watch, which makes it feel as if the watch was an antique watch which has been repurposed and set into a leather cuff.

Nouveau chez / New at: FNKY!, Mhaijik Things, Stellar Designs…

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Casual, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Saturday, May 24th, 2008

Funk Schnook from FNKY talked to me about new versions of the “Kicks” sneakers months ago…but nothing came out! At last, he found time to release new colors for his unsurpassed sculpty sport shoes, with a vintage flair! You will see below our 8 favorite colors out of 12. They are no modify but come in 5 sizes to fit any avatar size. First “Kicks” were launched at 550 Lindens a pair, with a 12 color fat pack priced at 3500 Lindens. After a while and certainly due to their huge success, Funk was naughty and raised the price to 600 Lindens a pair. But with this new release, the price of any Kick (old and new release) is now 500 Lindens a pair, with a fat pack of 12 colors for 2000 Lindens. The first release has now the same price scheme. Wow, 2/3 off on the fat pack, that’s some bargain! If you considered buying at least 3 pairs in one series, you definitely need to choose the everything pack. Copy, no transfer.

I’ve always liked Lexi Morgan’s stuff for men. The basics she designs for Stellar Designs always have that little extra sexiness that makes them different, thanks to Lexi’s talent at playing with highlights and shadows on specific spots ;-) This “Snazzy” outfit collection is a good oportunity to get a pair of good jeans and a matching shirt, both with a subdued checkered pattern, for a good price. They come in 6 colors (5 shown here). The pants are moddable, and everything is copy, transfer. You can pick your favorite colors for 285 Lindens each.

Also showing: another great hair from Exile, “Liam,” in the new great textures Kavar Cleanslate offers, and a ring and a bracelet from the brand new Mhaijik Guillume’s collection for men.

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Casual, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Kal Rau has some new items at his shop, including this cool striped “Punisher” shirt with a long sleeved t underneath, and these baggy skate pants. Jeans seem to have come a long way in the last couple years on SL. These are saggy without looking distorted, with low placed back pockets and — on the pair I’m wearing here — a ring of keys and a chain connecting from front to back. The ring contains a well-done Swiss style army knife, car key and electronic key, and a kal rau tag. Very cool…the detail is amazing.

I’ve completed this outfit with Truth’s “Jared” hair in toffee, and the brown tartan All-Stars from Hoorenbeek, featured before on slmen.

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: Space Invaders

Domch Raymaker | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Punky | Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I’ll admit it - I’m old enough to remember Space Invaders. I think video games had evolved a fair bit to the level of ‘Donkey Kong’ and ‘Mario Brothers’ by the time I was old enough to go to the arcades myself, but Space Invaders had incredible staying power, and spawned a whole host of ‘alien invasion’ video games the likes of Galaxian, et al. Yes, yes, geek stuff, I know.

Today’s outfit is my take on geek chic. I came across the monogrammed Space Invaders tee (by Pes Voom, of CCDM) in a Japanese sim some weeks back and really loved it, but it wasn’t till I saw the Astro Zapper belt with its Space Invaders buckle that everything fell into place. The toy gun that comes with the Astro Zapper belt is great fun - it comes complete with firing poses and ‘pew pew’ noises.

The shoes, from Coke Dreadlow’s Urban Bomb Unit, have been duly raved about by other menswear blogs, and it’s praise that’s well-deserved. Lots of texture options, and a great deal of customizability - you can change the fabric, the colour of the stitches, and even the sole!

To give more depth to the monogrammed shirt, I’m wearing it on top of an old pullover from Form (the Mesh Bleach jacket), which sadly isn’t available anymore. The Weird Monkey Designs (WMD) jeans, with their rising sun motif, are my nod to the Japanese origins of the video game - Space Invaders was designed and programmed by Toshihiro Nishikada for the video game company Taito back in 1978. The jeans are part of a larger series by Maruko Sakigake, which includes Amsterdam and UK-themed jeans as well, available from the WMD store.

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: Sakura Sorcerer

Domch Raymaker | - Tenue/Outfit, Costume, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer, Special Event | Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

BareRose was a real revelation for me the first time I visited it. I still remember that heady sense of sheer visual intoxication - all those endless columns and rows of neo-Gothic Japanese couture. It made my head reel - you want to take in all at once, but of course it’s just impossible. I was 5 and in the giant toy store of my dreams all over again.

I re-experienced that same giddy joy last night when I popped by Discord Nightmare City. The parallels with BareRose are unmistakeable - wall upon wall of lace-and-latex-and-leather-confections, creative energy coursing up and down the panels like so much electricity. But Discord seems to have taken the narrative process one step further, weaving a story of futuristic fin-de-siecle into the collection of spaces (what they’ve called ’streets’) that together make up Nightmare city - searchlights ply the different floors in search of fugitives, and occasionally, the unwary shopper is momentarily trapped in a crosswire cage.

I’ve elected to showcase the one Discord outfit that seems to me to best exemplify its creativity, in this case, a reimagining of the neo-Gothic staple of the Victorian men’s suit. The Discord iconoclasts have dipped the usual black suit in an psychedelic pink dye and I find the end result most enchanting. Speaking of magic users, I owe a debt of inspiration to the SL artist Arahan Claveau and his trademark madcap spellcaster ensemble (Hello Kitty knickers and magic staff, in particular!). The Discord outfit is a little less culturally knowing, but I doubt I’d have dared to have donned something quite so pink if he hadn’t shown me just how much fun off-red magi have. The outfit comes with the belt depicted here, gloves, as well as glove strap attachments.

The other accessories on this outfit are the excellent Shearwater glasses from Serious Giggle, which comes with menu-driven controls for lens colour, transparency and lens gradation; there’s Mhaijik Guilaume’s new Kavi Poet Ring, whose gemstone’s kalediscopic colours swirl ever-so-gently around; as well as Striker Albatros’ delightful little magic bottle earring, from his ‘Maho-Do’ (Japanese for ‘Magic Emporium’) shop. Striker also stocks some great magic staves, which he’ll customise to a colour of your choice for a nominal fee. No prizes for guessing which colour I had my staff changed to.
