Necromancer By Night

Domch Raymaker | - Tenue/Outfit, Costume, Night, Special Event | Sunday, September 28th, 2008

With Halloween fever heating up in Second Life, I thought I’d get in on the act (and make a reappearance on SL Men) with an unearthly outfit that’s haunting in more than one sense of the word. I mean - with everyone else dressed as a vampire/mummy/werewolf/witch - surely you want to go to that SL Halloween party in something with a bit more oomph and pizzazz?

June Dion’s ‘Lich King’ outfit was released some time back, but I think it largely went under the radar of most of the fashion blogs at that point. (Then again, it *would* be hard to find another occasion to don this phantasmagoric number apart from Halloween or if you were visiting an RPG-themed sim.)

‘Lich King’ makes fascinating material for the amateur anthropologist - the horned hat with its twin horns tapering upward like a crescent moon (read: ancient pagan symbol) - seems vaguely Egyptian ; it’s almost like an anti-mitre (mitres being those high hats favoured by high-ranking Catholic clergy -  the Catholic ones don’t have horns, of course). The horns are repeated as a motif throughout the costume - most notably on the shoulders, where they flare magnificently outward, but also at the collar and all around the edge of the cape like a bony frill or ruff, and finally, encircling the waist. The bold colours and geometric shapes of the outfit’s utterly opulent textures recall African tribal prints, but the level of detail also makes you think of feel like you’re wearing a Medieval English tapestry or Middle Eastern magic carpet, in a weirdly wonderful way! It was this latter consideration that made me opt for a pair of ornate Turkish slippers by way of footwear.

To top off a fantastic outfit, ‘Lich King’ comes with not one, but three (!) floating skulls that ominously orbit around you like a protective charm or guardian familiar. The vendor board at Barerose doesn’t show the floating skulls - a strange omission, because they add so much to the outfit - but that made the subsequent surprise all the more lovely. June’s also thoughtfully included a pair of eyes shot through with dancing flames, a crown, and an iron mask (great for Mardi Gras and masque-type events; crown and mask not depicted here). (And for SL Men’s female readership - as with many Barerose outfits, June has the female equivalent available too - look for ‘Lich Queen’ under the ‘Gothic’ section).

I’ve chosen a very pale skin to better offset the hyperchromatism of the outfit - Excess’ ‘Vario’ skin from the Androgyne range seemed quite perfect for this purpose. Oh - and for that little extra enchantment, I slipped on one of Ms. Guilaume’s mhajik-al rings.

Tenue du jour / Outfit of the day: “Akeyo,” “Kalrau,” and “Style Starts Here”

Perry Proudhon | - Every Day Outfits, - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual | Friday, September 26th, 2008

Okay, we all know there are lots of jeans to be found in Second Life, and it’s easy to argue that no more are needed, but when there’s something unique about a usually common piece of clothing, I think an exception can be made. These jeans from Kalrau are *ahem* very nicely shaded, with a quilted texture at the knees. They come in a belted and unbelted version, with small, medium and large versions of both a closed and open prim belt. I chose open to show here. It was fairly easy to position to look natural, but maybe a prim left and prim right section of the belt would allow for more variation in avatar size. I love this idea, I have to admit. I think it’s fun and, depending on where you are, could be a real conversation starter!

With the black jeans, I chose this 1957 Dublin jacket from Style Starts Here. This shop continues to be a real goldmine for inexpensive, multi-layer clothing, with a great selection of men’s stuff. Worn as the shirt layer with the waistband on the underpants layer, I was able to show off the prim belt. Simone always does a nice job with shading and detail, and there’s so much to choose from at SSH. Take a look and round out your wardrobe with good basics to mix and match.

Rounding out this outfit is the sharp Sun’s Gate watch from Fim Fischer, the recently featured AKIDAZ shoes from Akeyo, and Muse hair in black from Defectiva.

Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New At: “Pale Heretic”

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Dressy, Official, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Pale Janus, the designer behind “Pale Heretic,” is a man of many surprises. After having brought the spirit of bespoke in SL with his limited — and quite expensive — suits, he comes back on the scene with a couple of super affordable suits: “Core suit” (sold for 80 Lindens with 5 different shirts), and “Twisted Suit” (sold for 240 Lindens with 3 jacket versions, 3 pants versions, 6 shirts, gloves, 4 tattoos…) soon on slmen. Exclusivity amateurs, don’t worry, Pale will offer you soon new limited series of suits! Limited or unlimited series offer the same level of quality: the best. Just on one hand everyone can have a suit, with a low price and unlimited amount of copies sold, and on the other hand only a few will buy a limited very short series, at high prices, but for a real exclusivity and not, as some do — too many these days it seems — just selling at stratospheric prices items with unlimited amount of copies.

Lets talk about this “Core Suit”: in the pack, you will get a pair of pants on the pants layer, a jacket on the jacket layer, and 5 different shirt and tie combos on the shirt layer. Four shirts are dark grey, one with a nice embroidery on it (it shows only when you wear it without the jacket), with different green ties, one is green with a black tie. Everything is nicely textured, with an attention to details which is Pale Heretic mark of fabric. No prim attachment here, but shadowing and highlighting are so good you really don’t need any. Shirts are preset with some volume to the sleeves, so when you wear the jacket with them, no ugly tight sleeve look. You may want to tweak the setting to suit your taste, which is totally possible as everything is moddable (and copy-no transfer). Useless to tell you to run to take your copy of this very good suit at an incredible price!

Also showing: a nice new hair from Exile, “Avant Garde,” in the beautiful texture “Mink,” a preview of the new skin from Minnu Model Skin “Beijing” in “Sunkissed” tone in a nice chin beard version — Soon an indepth review on slmen —, the always perfect “Dublin” boots from “JCS” in this “Sage” color which matches perfectly the green on the “Core Suit,” and a superb platinum ring from “Guillaume pour homme.” Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New at: “Styles of edo”

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Formal | Sunday, September 21st, 2008

I’m showing here one of the new tuxedos from Styles of edo. The 2008 Tuxedo2, Coordinated04 comes with a black tuxedo jacket nicely accented in white at the lapel (on the jacket layer), jacket with black vest (also on the jacket layer), black vest on the jacket layer, black pants, and a wing collar white shirt with silver tie. Everything is moddable, copyable, and no transfer, and the set sells for 700 Lindens. edo’s tux sets kind of make my head spin; he puts so many combinations together that I get lost in all the choices. I’ve shown a few combinations of other jackets from two other new tux sets, as well as several options from the wingshirts fat pack, which includes 21 different shirt color/tie type & color combinations for 1600 Lindens, including red, blue, purples, yellows, white shirts combined with bowties, cross ties, and conventional ties of assorted colors. I prefer this to flexi ties which never look right to me. Deep black texture with subtle highlights, good seams and nice detail in these tuxes. Sometimes the colors in the shirts seem a little oversaturated (particularly the dark purple and dark yellow), making the highlights unnoticeable.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 3.5/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price:3.5/5 - Value for money: 4/5

The Solid Wave hair from Find Ash, shown here in Neo Black, is a fun style, but I’m not happy with the sparseness of the prims in the back which, when combined with the flexiness, causes bald spots to show through. Makes this hair a decent one for a photo shoot, but not sure I would wear it out and about SL much, which is too bad because I really like the style.

Finishing off the look, I’ve chosen the Gallop shoes from Kalnins, in black and the Kavi Poet ring from Mhaijik Guillaume.

Enjoy!

Nouveau chez / New At: “Redgrave”

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Casual | Saturday, September 20th, 2008

Emilia Redgrave just released a new suit. Well, i should say a full suit pack, as it’s generous in options and layers. The “Suit Elegance” comes with a pair of black pants on the pants layer, a jacket in three versions on the jacket layer: jacket alone, jacket with shirt, jacket with shirt and vest; a vest on the jacket layer in two versions, long and short, and on the shirt layer, a dress shirt on the jacket, shirt and undeshirt layer, plus complement on the underpants layer, a sleeve puffer on the shirt layer (to wear with the jacket over it - no more ugly tight jacket’s sleeves YAY!), and a few attachments: Jacket foulard, Pocketwatch, a pair of cuffs for the jacket, a pair of cuffs for the shirt, two versions of the tie: one to wear with the vest, one to wear with the jacket. Wow!

The textures are sophisticated, especially for the shirt and vest (this vest is simply gorgeous). The black pants lack a bit of highlighting to give them some life under SL light, but at least it avoids the jagged bottom pants bug! I’m showing the cuffs on the composite, but you can choose to wear “Suit Elegance” without them. I particularly like the jacket’s cuffs. I’m less convinced with the shirt’s ones, but, as they’re optional, everyone will follow their own taste!

The watch is nice, works on the jackets or on the vest. The foulard is a cool addition. The ties, done to match both vest or jacket over a shirt is a nice idea, i just wish for a better adjustment to the clothing layer. When you pay 1200 Lindens for a suit, you can be demanding, right? ;-)

Anyway, this suit is a great addition to any wardrobe. When you wear it, the whole ensemble looks really great, and even stunning, and I’m sure it wil be a success. Every piece of the pack is moddable, as every good house does. More rare, “Suit Elegance” is no copy, transfer, so easily giftable! Ladies, think of it if you are fed up with your man wearing skull stained tees! :-)

To go along with this very elegant suit, i chose to show you the new “Elegance Shoes” from Redgrave as well! Sculpty work, nicely textured, very realistic and shiny, they bring to SL something of this Italian style which is sometimes a bit show off, but always irresistible! They come in 6 colors; “Black” was the best choice for this outfit. These very original shoes (speaking of SL of course!) have to be in your inventory, like the “Kalninsshown a while ago. These shoes are moddable, which allows you to tweak their size to fit your avie. After all these scripted shoes, I’ve become lazy and I have to admit manual adjustment of shoes is a bit tedious, especially when you are not used to it, and when it comes to making them both the same size (shrink or stretch them using the “stretch” mode and the white handles, check the size in the “object” tab but just don’t type the number there, you would ruin your shoes (linked objects don’t like direct input of numbers in these boxes). To avoid any issue, better do a backup copy of your original shoes, as they are copy-no transfer! I’m sure you will enjoy them as much as i did.

Also showing sophisticated hair from “Little Heaven,” adding a final touch to my italian look, a nice ring from “Dahlinks” and the “Neo” skin from “Damiani.”

Nouveau chez / New from: “Akeyo”, “Dinzeo Designs”, & “Studio Sidhe”

Perry Proudhon | - Every Day Outfits, - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual | Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Dinzeo Designs recently released this nicely textured argyle sweater hoodie, featuring sculpty attachments for hood, cuffs, front pockets and waistband. I’m not usually thrilled with hoodie cuffs or pockets, but I like these for a couple of reasons. First, the waistband (easily adjustable, by the way) has a stretched out look to it that makes it look more natural and realistic to me. Second, the texture of the front pockets reminds me of those soft leather patches you sometimes see on the elbows of jackets. I also like the kind of attention to detail like the ends on the hoodie ties. (This might be picky, but I’d almost like an eyelet where the tie enters the fabric of the hood to give it a nicer finish that matches the rest of the sweater design.) It’s interesting to note that the only thing photosourced on this sweater is the zipper! An excellent example of handdrawn SL fashion.

Completing this ensemble from Dinzeo is a pair of jeans, with a baggy wrinkled effect, highlighted with sculpty side pockets. Good seamwork and shading, and an interesting pairing of photosourced work with the handdrawn sweater. You get both the sweater and jeans for only 200 Lindens!

Akeyo really are masterful at sneakers, and these new AKIDAZ are well done as expected, with the trademark untied laces, and the ease of changing color by script. The nice part is being able to change the color of all the shoe parts. (I wasn’t real adventurous here and went with black, grey and white, but know there are many color choices, in any number of combinations, each shoe colored individually….GO WILD.)

I complemented this outfit with the Silver Surfy Wave Pendant from Studio Sidhe, a black enameled silver pendant with a simple wave motif, and the Kavi Poet Ring from Mhaijik Guillaume.

Enjoy!
