Tenue du jour / Outfit of the Day: “Rfyre,” “Gutterblood,” “Ottico” and a Few Words about Sezmra Svarog

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Costume, Night, Special Event | Sunday, September 14th, 2008

When I first thought about shooting “Dysis” from Rfyre, I sampled various hairstyles trying to find something that suited the mysterious feel of this ensemble. I think the obvious choice would have been some untamed tresses, lending a romantic air. But as I experimented with different skins, I suddenly saw Dysis as less of an elegant gothic outfit and more dark, almost post-apocalyptic.

Raven Pennyfeather’s costumes are always inspired and nicely textured, this time in tactile embossed leather, bright metallic tones, soft blood-red velvet. The “jacket” is actually a floor-length leather cloak with collar, accessorized with upper and lower sleeves, extended on the glove layer. A mesh shirt on the undershirt layer is topped with leather lace-up shirt on the jacket layer. The leather pants include sculpty prim cuffs (not shown). Finishing off Dysis is a shimmering silver belt double wrapped around the waist.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 4/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 4/5 - Price:3/5 - Value for money: 4/5

To complete this outfit, I chose Gutterblood Spoonhammer’s stompy and distressed futureterror boots, still specially priced at 100L. Left boot features an outside buckle and right boot a small outside pocket.

The special anniversary glasses from Ottico fit perfectly, I think, with transparency anti-intuitively set to 100%, giving the glasses a mirror lens.

And underneath it all, the wonderful Black Demonic Skin Claw by Sezmra Svarog, from Nora BodySkins, unfortunately not available anymore. Sezmra is a talented long-time skin designer who recently closed up her shop for good, giving up doing business for money in Second Life for her new endeavor, giving away not only her last women’s skins but the Photoshop files themselves so anyone can customize the skins to their liking. This creative spirit, not the sadly more common desire to get rich, quickly or otherwise, in SL, is pretty inspiring. Hearkens back to the original purpose of SL before it became a land of ad parks and overpriced duplicates of real life fashion. Thank you, Sezmra, for your part in renewing that spark of what used to make us happy to log in here.

edited to add: I’ve received a few IMs in world addressing the comments I made about Sezmra. I have no problem with people who make their living on SL by putting their creative energy into creating…the problem I have is with people who only put their creative energy into marketing, while creating duplicates of real life clothing. Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my text.

Tenue de Rentrée / Back to School outfit: “Kalnins,” “Kalrau,” “Ottico,” “Robin (Sojourner) Wood”…

Perry Proudhon | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Semi-Casual | Sunday, August 31st, 2008

The Gallop Shoes from Kalnins are script controlled, where you can choose from eleven colors (light blue, light brown, white (shown on main composite), blue, green, light green, and grey, as well as brown, magenta, black and brown grey (shown in second composite). By clicking the left shoe, you can also control size, choosing from small, medium or large preset sizes as well as Size- and Size+ for fine tuning the size manually, and position control. Lastly, you can control the shininess (shininess is set to ‘off’ here), as well as accessing the landmark for Kalnins and choosing whether or not you want a walking sound (I find walking sounds unnerving in SL, personally).

These shoes are unique, featuring uncommon colors (although some classic colors are missed, like dark brown, burgundy, maybe a true dark blue), a long narrow shape so unlike most SL shoes for men that it’s almost disturbing, and a sharp design that matches both dressy slacks and jeans. They are copy/no trans, a great bargain since you get all eleven colors for only 500L.

Quality: 4/5 - Style-Originality: 3.5/5 - Usability (different layers, modify perms, amount of outfits put together with a single pack, sizes for attachments…): 5/5 - Price:4.5/5 - Value for money: 4.5/5

This grey cardigan from Kalrau is stylish and comfortable looking, with typical Kalrau texturing, a soft grey sweater over a subdued green plaid shirt. Because it only comes as a jacket layer, I miss having the choice of different layers, as it could conceivably be worn with a jacket over the top, or a coat. I wear sleeve fillers set at 6 to avoid “tight sleeve syndrome.”

Ottico Numero 74 glasses, also script controlled, allow you to control the frame color, with a choice of pink, green, black, red or wood (shown). A classic, sturdy shaped frame and slightly translucent lens, allowing you to easily see your av’s eye color, make these a good choice for glasses. I only wish I could adjust the opacity of the lenses.

Completing this outfit are jeans from Robin (Sojourner) Wood, available for a mere 50L, masterfully textured and tinted a dark grey, a ring from Mhaijik Guillaume’s found objects series, Exile’s Echo hairstyle in Greystone, and a bag sadly no longer available from Republik (sorry).

Nouveau chez / New at: Gearshift, Ottico & Random.

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Automne-Hiver/Fall-Winter, Casual, Punky | Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Donovan Brennen, the designer behind Gearshift, was on a creative hiatus. I know many people missed him. He came back a few weeks ago on the SL fashion scene with a couple of hoodies and matching tee shirts which are definitely must-have.

“Guile Man” (shown in the main composite) and “Icon Red Male” (look at it on the secondary composite) offer very original textures in cool colors. “Guile” shows a very nice and original pixelated camo pattern in khaki and olive for the jacket, worn over a tee shirt full of bombs! “Icon Red” jacket is softer, with its jacket with subdued red pattern and fur collar worn over a modern-lover themed tee-shirt.

Showing [GearShift] GUILE MALE.

In each pack, you will get different layers allowing you to wear the hoodie alone, or with a tee-shirt underneath, or the tee-shirt alone (combinations of shirt and jacket layer); two prim sculpty cuffs to wear with the sleeves rolled up (using the sleeve length slider of the jacket on appearance mode); a hood, worn down, in three sizes; the same hood in a worn up version, in three sizes as well; 2 pre-sized prim lower parts. Note that you can buy for a small price a special hair complement especially designed by the talented Aemilia Case, coming in four colors, to wear with the hood up. This is a really good idea, as most of the time you are forced to go bald under hoodies, due to the hair showing up through them.

I like the amount of options offered. The prim attachments are nicely done and not too tricky to adjust, but I have to say I’m not a fan of the the prim lower part for jackets idea. Donovan’s work is not the problem; I have the same question on each and every piece of clothing on the market with a prim lower jacket. You can adjust them the best you can, and it looks good on a certain pose, with an amazing 3D feeling you can’t get even with the best texture ever; but how can you deal with them when you walk, sit, or let your AO change your poses? You will see that prim attachment passing through your body, again and again… Okay, first, it’s not painful at all; and second, I know many people who really don’t care. But I’m definitely not convinced, although I agree it’s a great enhancement on a purely aesthetic point, on static poses, after proper adjustment . Maybe one day we will have some script making this kind of attachment follow your body movement (like the one for women’s skirts, kinda)? Until then, I consider SL limitations too much of an issue to really allow this kind of enhancement on clothing. That said, I’m very thankful to those at Gearshift, Muism and Cubic Effect, to name a few, for trying to push the limits to the max!

Each of the new hoodie/shirt packs from Gearshift is sold for 400 Lindens. Everything is moddable and copy-no transfer. You can get special hair complements for 75 Lindens each.

Also showing: another great hair from Exile, “Leto,” nice gloves with prim attachments (can we live without them? :-D) from Drawmachine, superb jeans from Random (without prim cuffs! YAY), and the Combat Boots from Hoorenbeek in that new color “old brown.”

I wouldn’t forget the special anniversary googles from Ottico! They come in three versions: on nose, on head (both shown) and hanging around the neck. They are fully scriptable for color changing, moddable and copy-no transfer. I love their buckles and leather texture. Thank you Youki Rau, and keep up the good work!

Nouveau chez / New at “Soreal,” plus “Iki,” “Ottico,” “Redgrave,” “0 Style”…

Ben Vanguard | - Tenue/Outfit, Casual, Night, Printemps-Eté / Spring-Summer | Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Introducing today the creations of a new designer in world: Kwamey Pinion for Soreal. Thanks to Landon Gibbs, faithful reader, who plugged me on this brand!
For now, Kwamey offers a range of vintage sport jackets, nicely textured, with a lot of prim attachments. These attachments have the particularity of being no-moddable, which would usually prevent them from being featured on Slmen, but they are resizable by menu. This way of adjusting attachments is precise and safe. But there is more. The jackets are sold in several packs, in male and female versions, and in each pack you get 2 color options and 2 inscription options. The prim attachment (cuffs, colar, belt) are moddable by HUD. The HUD will allow you to change the color of the collar and cuffs, to match the color of the jacket you selected, to choose the color of the turtleneck under the jacket, or to take it off, to show or not the brand logo on the belt’s buckle, and finally to choose two metal options for the zipper and the belt’s buckle.
You can have each color pack for 495 Lindens.

To go along with these jackets, I wore very realistic sculpted sneakers from Redgrave, good jeans from Iki (I chose them because they come in white, and good white jeans are really rare in sl!), and for the first time on Slmen, hair from Zero Style, by Rei Gully, whose new creations I will soon show! You can appreciate one more time the new updated Envision skin from The Body Politik, in a very masculine “Scraggly Goatee” facial option. To finish the look, some very edgy glasses from Ottico! Enjoy!
